THE RAMBLERS - SANDWELL GROUP

“SANDWELL STRIDE” - HEALTH WALKS

Research shows that walking is an effective way to keep fit. To really benefit however, walking has to be done at a brisk pace and for a set period of time. Striding is health walking.

Stride health walking involves walking at a pace that is both safe and effective. Regular Striders burn more fat, are fitter, and have less chance of future coronary heart disease than their sedentary counterparts. Inactivity is as big a risk to health as smoking, high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels. But more importantly, Striders really enjoy this form of purposeful walking.

We all walk at some stage of the day. With a little bit of extra effort, we can turn this time into a health walk. To promote health walking, Sandwell Primary Care Trust in association with the Sandwell Group of the Ramblers commenced running "Stride Health Walks" in 1999. Over the last 13 to 14 years, the programme has increased to over 40 walks per week throughout Sandwell Borough and is now operated by My Time Active. During these sessions you will meet other Striders and learn about health walking under the guidance of a qualified leader.

The health walk lasts about 60 minutes. Within that time, you will work your aerobic system, burn calories, tone muscles and increase flexibility. But above all, everyone has a great time!

Simply turn up on the day wearing loose clothes and comfortable footwear and join in the fun. If you have any questions about the walks, ring the leaders below.

Do not worry if you have not walked much before. All ranges of abilities are welcome to attend. Ring the appropriate leader as listed below or Judy Blaney, Sandwell Stride Walks Co-ordinator at My Time Active on 0121 366 8512 if you have any queries, or would like to talk to someone about your particular situation.

“GET WALKING KEEP WALKING”

Get Walking Keep Walking is a Ramblers run project funded by Big Lottery and the Ramblers Holiday Trust. Its aim is to find people new to walking, particularly those who are inactive or who have health problems, and motivate them to walk more regularly - ideally for at least 30 minutes per day.

The website www.getwalking.org went live in early 2010.  Since then, it has received more than 100,000 visits and was nominated for the 2010 APA Non Profit Website of the Year Award.

Website users can:

Learn more about the benefits of walking and find useful hints and tips on getting started.

View and download an ever growing number of short and easy walking routes specifically designed for beginners.

Find out about led walks in their area.

Complete an online version of a popular 12 week walking plan.  Its a free motivational tool designed for people new to walking, to help gradually build activity levels over time.  Users can schedule walks, set personal goals, save their favourite walks from across the web, keep track of how many steps they have walked so far and set a start date that suits them.

In the first half of 2011, a number of new features were added to the site, including:

A comprehensive guide to walking for beginners, combining all existing Ramblers handbooks targeted at people new to walking (7 in total) into one easy to navigate and accessible online guide.

An online development tool and database which allows trained route developers to create their own short walking routes online.  Volunteers will be able to draw their map, write route instructions, conduct risk assessments and add photos.  Once these routes have been peer-checked by other volunteers and approved by administrators, they will be stored in our online database and published to the web.

The ability to search Get Walking walks alongside short walks offered by Ramblers Areas and Groups.
